In many cultures around the world, the presence of another human being at the moment of passing was entirely natural. Family, loved ones, or community members kept vigil by the dying person, creating a space for peace, dignity, and farewells.
Modern medicine can effectively treat and prolong life, but there is often a lack of time and space for the emotional, spiritual, and social dimensions of the dying process.
This is exactly where the role of an End-of-life Doula emerges.
An end-of-life doula is a person trained to provide non-medical support to individuals at the end of their lives and their families. Their task is not to treat or interfere with the therapeutic process, but to accompany, be present, and provide support in one of the most difficult moments of human life.
A doula acts as a calm, competent presence—someone who helps navigate the dying process in a more conscious, peaceful, and dignified manner.
The support of an end-of-life doula may include, among other things:
Doulas work in various environments: in private homes, hospices, hospitals, care homes, and by providing remote support for families.
A social movement restoring the natural dimension of death is developing in many countries today. More and more people are seeking not only medical care but also psychological, social, and spiritual support.
In response to these needs, a new field of social support is emerging—end-of-life companionship and care, of which the role of an end-of-life doula is a crucial part.
An End-of-life Doula provides strictly non-medical support.
A doula is not a healthcare professional; they do not diagnose, conduct therapy, or make medical decisions. Their role is to accompany, provide emotional support, and assist with organization during the dying process.
The doula's work is fully complementary to the work of doctors, nurses, and hospice teams.
The "Ostatnia Warta" Foundation is also developing an educational program dedicated to accompanying people at the end of life.
As part of our activities, we plan to launch online courses that will allow participants to acquire basic competencies in accompanying dying individuals and supporting their families. Participants in our training programs will be able to obtain a certificate of completion issued by the "Ostatnia Warta" Foundation.
The Ostatnia Warta Foundation was created from the belief that every person deserves dignity until the very end.
Sometimes the greatest help is not action, but presence.
The quiet presence of another human being.
That is why we stand watch.
