Loneliness and Illness

Presence where illness brings loneliness

Illness never affects only the body.

Very often, it also affects the psyche, relationships, everyday life, and a sense of security. It enters the home, the rhythm of the day, the silence, the fear, and ordinary matters that suddenly cease to be ordinary.

The Ostatnia Warta Foundation was created to be present where illness takes away a person's strength, and loneliness tries to take even more.

Because we believe that no one should go through the experience of illness alone.

Illness is not just a medical problem

Modern medicine can do a lot.

It treats. It relieves pain. It diagnoses. It conducts therapy.

But there are areas where even the best treatment cannot replace another human being. There are moments when the illness itself is not the only thing that hurts. What also hurts is:

That is why the presence of another human being and support in areas that medicine cannot handle alone are so important.

An illness that lasts a long time

Not every illness comes suddenly and leaves quickly.

There are experiences that stretch over weeks, months, and sometimes years. They enter the rhythm of everyday life. They change plans, relationships, work, rest, and the way of looking at the future.

Chronic illness and oncological disease very often do not only affect the body. They also affect:

In such moments, a person very often needs not only treatment. They also need presence, peace, and someone who will not look away from their everyday reality.

Because the hardest part of an illness is not just the suffering. Sometimes the hardest part is that life begins to pass in increasing isolation.

When illness marks a lifetime

There are diagnoses that do not end with a single hospitalization or a short treatment.

There are experiences of illness that change a person's entire life. Their everyday reality. Their sense of agency. Their way of functioning among others.

This also applies to people who live with an illness for a long time, learning a new everyday life, new limitations, and a new rhythm of life every single day.

In such situations, simple but fundamental things become especially important:

Because a human being is never "their illness." They are always someone more.

Where the Ostatnia Warta Foundation is present

The Foundation was created to be there where illness takes away a person's strength, and loneliness tries to take even more.

We accompany sick people and their families through concrete and non-medical forms of support:

Our answer to loneliness in illness is keeping watch, presence, and tangible solidarity.

Where illness is accompanied by silence and stigma

Some illnesses bring not only pain, treatment, and fear. They also bring something else: silence.

The silence of the surroundings. Silence born of shame. Silence arising from misunderstanding, prejudice, or social distance.

There are situations in which a person struggles not only with their own health condition but also with the burden of being misunderstood or judged.

This also applies to people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as those whose experience of illness is burdened by stereotypes, fear, or rejection.

We believe that no one should be left alone not only with pain but also with the burden of stigmatization. That is why we want to be close also where the following are most needed:

Because a human being does not lose their dignity through a diagnosis. Never.

Support for families

The illness of one person very often becomes the experience of the entire family.

It is the loved ones who most often carry the burden of everyday life: they organize treatment, keep watch, help, worry, make decisions, and try to be strong when they can barely stand on their own two feet.

That is why our activities are also directed at families and caregivers of sick people. They include, among others:

Because caring for a human being in illness can be beautiful. But it can also be extremely exhausting.

An illness can take a lot from a person.
It should not take away the presence of another human being.

A human being should not be alone

We believe that illness should not mean loneliness.

No one should go through the most difficult moments of life without human presence — regardless of the diagnosis, prognosis, or the burden of everyday life.

That is exactly why the Ostatnia Warta Foundation exists.

Because sometimes the greatest help is simply to be there for another human being.

Support presence where illness brings loneliness

If caring for the sick and their loved ones is close to your heart, you can support the activities of the Ostatnia Warta Foundation or join as a volunteer.

Because even in the most difficult times, a human being needs another human being the most.
